One of the first enamel badges from our Andy Dog Collection.

This design is the re-working by Andy Dog of the iconic artwork he created for his brother’s seminal album, Soul Mining. The original artwork disappeared from CBS when it was sent there to be scanned and reproduced for the Soul Mining album sleeve. It was never returned to Andy Dog or Matt – it was either lost or stolen. Andy Dog recreated it at a later date and this is the version that we have used for the enamel badge, giclée print and t-shirt.

Andrew Johnson (aka Andy Dog), Matt’s late brother, created the artwork for many of THE THE’s early album and single sleeves. His work often featured tortured, grimacing figures coupled with black-humoured, melancholic themes. He trained at Camberwell School of Art, contributed to many European and British underground comics and magazines and also worked for the UK music press. He was responsible for establishing the visual identity of the Some Bizzare record label as well as creating sleeves for numerous other recording artists.

Though small and jewel-like at 28mm x 22mm, this enamel bronze badge has a pleasing heft of 2mm thick, with a butterfly fastening and red THE THE logo de-bossed into the back.
