First of all though please try out the Front Page News Bureau. Now there’s no need to leave the site for up to the minute news around the world as we’ve provided live headline feeds from BBC News & Sport, The New York Times, Le Monde Diplomatique and Reuters.

Also this issue we’re pleased to draw your attention to ‘TheThe Nite’. An evening of drinking and conversation organised by our moderators Steph and DrSebastian for Forum members to meet and finally put faces to names. Please put your name down in the Forum for details of where to go and how to win one of the various prizes on offer. From t-shirts to signed albums.

BEST WISHES, BERNHARD
Directed by Johanna St Michaels

For her award winning documentary film “Best Wishes, Bernhard’ Johanna St Michaels worked with an older man diagnosed with cancer. A man who expresses a disturbingly unsentimental viewpoint to the ending of his own life. He expresses loathing for caring and sorrow preferring instead to dwell upon food, sex and various other sensual pleasures. The resulting film is at times funny, poignant and macabre and not recommended for those of weak stomach.

“Best Wishes, Bernhard” won the Swedish film institute's “Dokumentärfilms Premien” 2003 and was nominated for “the kodak prize” in the Shadow filmfestival, Amsterdam 2004 and has been screened at Nordisk Panorma (Iceland 2004) Uppsala filmfestival (Sweden 2004) Tempo film festival (Sweden 2004) Vera filmfestival (Finland 2005)

MUG
Directed by Gerard Johnson

For his award winning short film director Gerard Johnson’s powerful and thought provoking drama follows a violent criminal who leaves the concrete jungle of the council estate to stalk London’s East End looking for bags to steal, but soon discovers some bags hold dark secrets. Emerging from Whitechapel tube station he hones-in on a young man carrying a rucksack and turning into a small alleyway. Grabbing the man from behind he attacks him leaving him dazed and bloodied, and makes off with the bag. Back in the station he rifles through the bag looking for anything of value. Disappointed and angered the man sets off again in search of a worthwhile hit. He sees a young woman waiting for the tube with a bag on her knee. He follows her onto the train and waits for his opportunity to pounce. But all is not as it seems. This will be no ordinary snatch.

Big Issue Film Festival Audience Winner November 2004.

SNAP SHOTS FROM REALITY
Directed by Johanna St Michaels

This short powerful film is about one woman’s battle with cancer. Jackie had been diagnosed with uterine cancer and wanted her body documented before she had any treatment. Jackie made this project possible by giving film maker Johanna St Michaels total access to both her emotional and physical life. Jackie has written her point of view (here spoken by actress Victoria Scarborough) as an accompaniment to the photos.

www.climateprediction.net

What is climateprediction.net?

Climateprediction.net is the largest experiment to try and produce a forecast of the climate in the 21st century. To do this, we need people around the world to give us time on their computers - time when they have their computers switched on, but are not using them to their full capacity.

Why?
Climate change, and our response to it, are issues of global importance, affecting food production, water resources, ecosystems, energy demand, insurance costs and much else. There is a broad scientific consensus that the Earth will probably warm over the coming century; climateprediction.net should, for the first time, tell us what is most likely to happen.

What do we want you to do?
You can download a climate model from this website. It will run automatically as a background process on your computer whenever you switch your computer on. It should not affect any other tasks you use your computer for. As the model runs, you can watch the weather patterns on your, unique, version of the world evolve. The results are sent back to us via the internet, and you will be able to see a summary of your results on this web site.

“We don’t do body counts”
General Tommy Franks, US Central Command

The worldwide update of reported civilian deaths in the Iraq war and occupation. We put accuracy above speed and do not update the data base until we have located and cross-checked two or more independent approved news sources for the same incident. We are not a news organization ourselves and like everyone else can only base our information on what has been reported so far. What we are attempting to provide is a credible compilation of civilian deaths that have been reported by recognized sources. Our maximum therefore refers to reported deaths - which can only be a sample of true deaths unless one assumes that every civilian death has been reported. It is likely that many if not most civilian casualties will go unreported by the media. That is the sad nature of war.
