Let it not be said that people in the United States did
nothing when their government declared a war without limit
and instituted stark new measures of repression.
The signers of this statement call on the people of the
U.S. to resist the policies and overall political direction
that have emerged since September 11, 2001, and which
pose grave dangers to the people of the world.
We believe that peoples and nations have the right to
determine their own destiny, free from military coercion
by great powers. We believe that all persons detained
or prosecuted by the United States government should have
the same rights of due process. We believe that questioning,
criticism, and dissent must be valued and protected. We
understand that such rights and values are always contested
and must be fought for.
We believe that people of conscience must take responsibility
for what their own governments do we must first
of all oppose the injustice that is done in our own name.
Thus we call on all Americans to RESIST the war and repression
that has been loosed on the world by the Bush administration.
It is unjust, immoral, and illegitimate. We choose to
make common cause with the people of the world.

The mission of The Progressive is to be a journalistic
voice for peace and social justice at home and abroad.
The magazine, its affiliates, and its staff steadfastly
oppose militarism, the concentration of power in corporate
hands, the disenfranchisement of the citizenry, poverty,

In all of its activities, The Progressive, as it has since
1909, strives to put forward ideas that will help bring
about a more just society and a more peaceful, humane
world. We champion peace, social and economic justice,
civil rights, civil liberties, human rights, a preserved
environment, and a reinvigorated democracy.
For nine decades, The Progressive has been a courageous
voice for democracy, peace, social justice, civil rights,
civil liberties, and environmental awareness.
For nine decades, The Progressive has denounced corporate
power and decried U.S. support for brutal regimes abroad.

The rest of Europe must be wondering whether Britain has
gone into hibernation. At the end of this month our Prime
Minister is likely to announce the decision he made months
ago, that Britain will follow the US into Iraq. If so,
then two or three weeks later, the war will begin. Unless
the UN inspectors find something before January 27, this
will be a war without even the flimsiest of pretexts:
an unprovoked attack whose purpose is to enhance the wealth
and power of an American kleptocracy. Far from promoting
peace, it could be the first in a series of imperial wars.
The gravest global crisis since the end of the Cold War
is three weeks away, and most of us seem to be asking
why someone else doesn't do something about it.
It is not often that the people of these islands have
an opportunity to change the course of world events. Bush
knows that the Americans' approval of his war depends,
in part, upon its credibility overseas: opinion polls
have shown that many of those who would support an international
attack would withdraw that support if they perceived that
the US was acting alone. An international attack, in this
case, means an attack supported by Britain. If Blair pulled
out, Bush could be forced to think again. Blair will pull
out only if he perceives that the political cost of sticking
with Bush is greater than the cost of deserting him. Bush's
war, in other words, depends upon our indifference. As
Gramsci remarked, "what comes to pass does so not
so much because a few people want it to happen, as because
the mass of citizens abdicate their responsibility and
let things be".

Seven Stories Press is a New York-based independent publisher.
Under the direction of publisher Dan Simon, perhaps no
other small independent house in America has consistently
attracted so many important voices away from the corporate
publishing sector.
Last year, Seven Stories was named the fastest growing
independent publisher in America by Publishers Weekly.
The press consistently wins awards for its books, and
is known for its high editorial and production standards,
as well as for how well it supports its books in the marketplace.
On several notable occasions, Seven Stories has stepped
in to publish -- on First Amendment grounds - important
books that were being refused the right to publish for
political reasons, including Pulitzer-prize winning journalist
Gary Webb's Dark Alliance, about the CIA-Contra-crack
cocaine connection, Carol Felsenthal's biography of the
Newhouse family, Citizen Newhouse, and distinguished journalist
and death row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal's censored essays
in All Things Censored.
In January 2001, Seven Stories began semiannual publication
of Autodafe, the journal of the International Parliament
of Writers under the direction of its president, Russell
Banks, and founding Secretary General, Christian Salmon.

Personally,
I'm in favor of democracy, which means that the central
institutions of society have to be under popular control.
Now, under capitalism, we can't have democracy by definition.
Capitalism is a system in which the central institutions
of society are in principle under autocratic control.
Thus, a corporation or an industry is, if we were to think
of it in political terms, fascist; that is, it has tight
control at the top and strict obedience has to be established
at every level -- there's little bargaining, a little
give and take, but the line of authority is perfectly
straightforward. Just as I'm opposed to political fascism,
I'm opposed to economic fascism. I think that until the
major institutions of society are under the popular control
of participants and communities, it's pointless to talk
about democracy.
Noam Chomsky is one of America's most prominent political
dissidents. A renowned professor of linguistics at MIT,
he has authored over 30 political books dissecting such
issues as U.S. interventionism in the developing world,
the political economy of human rights and the propaganda
role of corporate media.
The main Chomsky Archive is archive is hosted by ZNet,
the web site of Z Magazine. It contains the full text
to many of Chomsky's major works, the complete audio to
several important lectures, and numerous articles, interviews
and speeches and can be found at

As a handful of huge corporations control more and more
of the flow of ideas, Common Courage Press offers an important
way for alternative voices to be heard. By publishing
books for social justice, Common Courage Press helps progressive
ideas to find a place in our culture. The press provides
a platform to spread these ideas to activists and ordinary
citizens alike. It has sold a total of over one million
copies since its founding in 1991, and its books have
been translated and reprinted in 24 countries.
These books and others have made a strong impact through
major media coverage in the New York Times, Washington
Post, Los Angeles Times, New York Review of Books, San
Francisco Chronicle, and the Journal of the American Medical
Association, among other outlets. More important, the
press has given a voice to people and organizations who
might otherwise never have been heard, and inspired many
who might otherwise have stayed silent.
Common Courage often publishes books that larger houses
deem too controversial. Genetic engineering exposé
Against the Grain, for instance, was due to be published
by a major publisher, until Monsanto wrote a threatening
letter, and the original publisher pulled it. Common Courage
then published the book, even though authors Marc Lappe
and Britt Bailey warned the press about potential liability
issues. A local paper asked co-editor Greg Bates if the
press had liability insurance. "Yes, we do, as does
every American," Bates replied. "It's called
the First Amendment."
